Mandalay is the second biggest city in Myanmar. Its a beautiful place with its focal point being the old Mandalay Palace. Not too far out of the city – about a 45 minute drive – you reach mountain country and this is quite spectacular country too. At the foothills of these mountains you will find one of the games hidden gems the Yay Tagon Taung GC.
The Yay Tagon Taung GC is a 27 hole facility and who would have thought it would be this good. The design if anything is simple…..by that I mean its not over – complicated nor overcrowded which gives the golfer an opportunity to focus their attention on the existing features like the mountains which frame the golf beautifully and are dotted with monasteries, pagodas and even the odd waterfall.
The golf course also maneuvers wonderfully about the wooded terrain all the time in site of that mountain. Add to that trees – at least the time I visited – glowed with color and this in itself made the journey a special one. Everywhere you looked there were dabs of yellow and red and orange….a quite a spectacular scene. Of course the lesson being that if you embrace the existing features on (and off site) then the golf and experience is going to be that much better for it.
