My friends – at least a good percentage – think I am fortunate to travel and see the world. Of course I enjoy travel very much but the reality is that I often have little time opportunity to actually enjoy many of the places I visit for work. This is a big regret and I hope to rectify this in the months and years ahead.
Golf is very much a global game and this has given many of us Golf Architects the opportunity to visit places we probably would never have thought possible as kids – I have been to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka and Vietnam and Turkey and Madeira and Cambodia and Lanzarote (sorry Lanzagrotte) etc etc. I am of course fascinated by the multitude of different cultures and cuisines and the way people do things in different parts of the worlds. There is no question I am much more enriched because of my travel and hopefully a bit more interesting company as well.
Anyway this week I am in Denmark. I am talking at the Danish Greenkeepers Association conference (See: http://www.golfbusinessnews.com/news/exhibitions-and-conferences/danish-greenkeepers-conference-attracts-record-crowd/ ) and thought I would spend a few hours touring some of Copenhagen and visiting a few golf courses during the event (and when I am not speaking). The sad fact is that I have been to Copenhagen before (x2) but never taken the time to tour the city. I am happy to report that this afternoon I rectified this. I had a blast walking the town and taking in the sites and sounds and am now sat in a coffee shop drinking coffee and eating a local pastry.
Tomorrow I start the trip up north to Aalborg with Thomas Hoffman Jepsen (A Danish Golf Course Architect) who has very kindly offered (and arranged) to take me to a number of golf clubs on route to the event starting tomorrow.
